“The ultimate adventure destination in the Southeast,” the town of Boone is located in the High Country of North Carolina. Boone was named for legendary frontiersman, Daniel Boone, who maintained a hunting camp here. The surrounding mountains, such as Grandfather Mountain, boast elevations up to 6000 feet above sea level. Visitors to Boone will find the Southeast’s best sites for bouldering, rock climbing, snow sports, water sports, and cycling.
Known as “the Heart of the High Country,” Boone is home to Appalachian State University’s Mountaineers, three-time Football Championship Subdivision National Champions (2005-2007). ASU’s Appalachian Summer Festival features performers of national acclaim during the entire month of July.
Downtown Boone offers fun shopping emporiums and restaurants, including Southern Living favorite, Dan’l Boone Inn. Popular festivals, weekly outdoor concerts, and “Horn in the West” outdoor drama make the most of the temperate climate during summer. Fall leaf color is the best in the state.
Boone lawyer and Chamber of Commerce founder, Wade Edward Brown (1907-2009), owned a tract of land where the proposed Blue Ridge Parkway would cross U.S. Highway 321 near Boone. When the Parkway project was being developed in the area, Mr. Brown gladly sold his tract to the highway commission who later conveyed it to the federal government. Connected with the project through this very personal way as well as through the role of a young lawyer doing some of the title work, Wade found the project fascinating. “The Blue Ridge Parkway has been a tremendous asset to America,” said Mr. Brown in his autobiography, Recollections and Reflections (1997). “Since it has been in use, it has provided a natural wilderness setting, displaying the beauty of nature. It provides for wildlife and has been a big financial asset by funneling literally thousands of people [annually] through the area, particularly in the summertime.”
How We're Doing Our Part
Boone Convention & Visitors Bureau is located at the Chamber of Commerce office in the heart of downtown Boone, where we offer itineraries, historic walking maps, Blue Ridge Parkway maps, and information on the attractions and culture of the area. Featured during the anniversary year will be “Horn in the West,” Farm Heritage Days, Hickory Ridge Homestead Apple Festival, Concerts on the Lawn, Appalachian Summer Festival, and various other heritage festivals and music events.
