Originally called “Foggy Camp” by the Indians, Fancy Gap is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where heaven is a little closer. Being at the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the approximate 3000-foot elevation guarantees cooler temperatures than that of the valleys that surround us. Our Southern hospitality welcomes travelers opportunities to experience the natural beauty, breathtaking landscapes, and some historic landmarks of our great country. The beautiful cut-stone Parkway bridge built by stonemasons sits atop the spring that is the beginning of Yankee Creek, which flows down the mountain. Wildlife, wildflowers, mountain forest, and rolling hills with farms offer just about everything for visitors to enjoy while getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Come visit our local retailers for antiques, gifts, and crafts while stepping back in time to an easier way of life. bluegrass music can be heard at several locations in or close to Fancy Gap during the year.
Fancy Gap sets on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 199/Highway 52. Recently recognized as a “All American Road,” you can see why your visit to the Parkway and Fancy Gap is a must for your vacation plans. Come sit on “America’s Front Porch” and enjoy abundant outdoor activities or just sit back and relax. We await your pleasure.
Fancy Gap’s historic relationship with the Parkway goes back to earlier days when early roads followed creeks, deer paths, and Indian trails. However, the resilting grades and curves did not facilitate the passage of wagons easily, so individuals started building their own roads. These local roads were of poor quality for a long time until the Fancy Gap Turnpike was built. This was used as a stagecoach route, a route where cattle and crops were taken to market and a traffic route between Mt. Airy North Carolina and Virginia. When the Parkway was built, many locals also used the Parkway for taking their locally grown crops to market. Small communities starting springing up all along the Parkway. Fancy Gap is one such community offering a rural atmosphere for visitors to experiece a laid back way of life while enjoying the outdoors.
How We're Doing Our Part
Fancy Gap has long been a supporter of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Fancy Gap Tourism Committee and Blue Ridge HOST, Inc. have held countless events over the years and will continue our efforts during 2010 and the Parkway’s 75th Anniversary. These include the Cherry Pickin’ Festival, Apple Pickin’ Festival, a 4th of July celebration, and An Old-Fashioned Christmas in Fancy Gap. Our newest scheduled promotion along the Parkway is our Stone Church Tour, which will be scheduled for the spring and fall of 2010 and will include gospel music at the Fancy Gap Pickin’ Porch. All events offer crafters, artisans, car and motorcycle shows, storytellers, and local bluegrass music. We also support many other activities in other local communities and businesses.
We will promote this area as a destination point for travelers during 2010’s anniversary activities. Other local communities are encouraged to work together to build better relationships while promoting their own activities.
