John McGee is an associate professor in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech.  John has over 20 years of experience working with geospatial applications, which include geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), and remote sensing. John has worked extensively with all levels of government, both in the United States and abroad.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts in the department of landscape architecture and regional planning in 1997. 

Since 2003, John has led the Virginia Geospatial Extension Program at Virginia Tech. In this capacity, John works extensively to support the needs of Virginia’s communities and local governments. He coordinates his efforts with regional entities, nonprofit organizations, state agencies, and federal stakeholders, as well as an array of other stakeholders. He lives in Giles County, Virginia.

Roadside Advertising in a Digital Age: Virtual Marketing Opportunities for Rural Businesses along the Parkway

Advances in technology are resulting in a revolution in marketing. Location and place-based services – made possible through the integration of global positioning system (GPS) devices (including both portable and in-dash car navigation systems) – can be used to geographically connect potential consumers with nearby businesses. When integrated with the Internet via smartphone devices, these applications provide a technical bridge, linking potential (and often mobile) customers with nearby businesses and specific products. Likewise, businesses are also able to target and reach out to potential customers through the use of virtual coupons and other marketing techniques. This presentation will provide an overview of trends and applications that can be leveraged to increase a business, and a community’s presence.
