In Virginia, Roanoke County is the largest urban county west of Richmond and is the suburban hub of the Roanoke Valley. Within a day’s drive of half of the population of the United States, Roanoke is bisected by Interstate 81 and is less than 200 miles from both Richmond, the state capital, and Charlotte, NC. Washington D.C. is 240 miles northeast of Roanoke County. The road that defines Roanoke County best, however, is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which encompasses almost 3,000 acres, over 25 miles of roadbed, and four access points in the County. The parkway is an integral part of the Roanoke Valley’s commitment to tourism, to preserving outdoor spaces, and to providing diverse recreational opportunities among the Blue Ridge Mountains that surround this suburban community.
Roanoke is the largest metropolitan community on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, and although it offers all the amenities of a larger urban area - a strong arts and culture community, upscale restaurants, nationally recognized education system, and outstanding healthcare - it maintains much of its small-town charm with its southern hospitality and tranquil mountain atmosphere. Recreational opportunities are abundant with superior parks, trails and greenways, and a year-long schedule of festivals and special events for family enjoyment.

How We're Doing Our Part
Roanoke County is proud of its long history with the Blue Ridge Parkway, including its ongoing efforts to preserve, protect, and promote this national treasure. Roanoke County was instrumental in establishing the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center, which it currently operates and maintains at milepost 115. In addition to an exhibit gallery that chronicles the history of the Blue Ridge Parkway, visitors can enjoy an orientation video and a unique gift shop with both parkway- and anniversary-branded products. Roanoke was also home to the parkway’s first landscape architect and acting superintendent, Stanley Abbott, as well as the parkway’s headquarters before it was moved to the more centrally located Asheville in the 1970s in anticipation of an extension of the parkway into Georgia.
The County of Roanoke is pleased to be a lead sponsor of the Blue Ridge Parkway 75th Anniversary by providing staff and financial support for the anniversary effort.
