Newbern began in 1810 when Adam Hance laid off the land and started building houses. He remained a true businessman and a Newbern family by living there. His son, Henry, took over after Adam passed on and became a community leader.

Newbern receives visitors from Floyd and the Parkway several times a year for its activities, especially when Newbern holds a quilt show, genealogy workshop, and its fabulous Fall Festival of Arts and Crafts in early October.
