Expect the unexpected in Asheville, where age-old mountains and breathtaking scenery envelop this unconventional town. Surprises wait around every corner – a spontaneous drum circle, avant-garde theater, brew pubs, and chocolate lounges, and art that inspires the soul – all set against the backdrop of lush mountain peaks that beckon with adventure. For more than a century, the region has inspired authors, artists, and celebrities, including George Vanderbilt who built his home here – the 250-room Biltmore House. Fill your senses with art, architecture, music, and cuisine that mix mountain with modern, classic with country, elegant with unexpected. Indulge yourself with a day at a world-class spa. Or take a walk on the wild side with invigorating hikes, mountain biking, and rafting adventures. Asheville’s distinctive style makes it one of the world’s most unique and enticing destinations, according to top travel editors who recently named it one of a dozen top travel destinations in the world.
Asheville community leaders were instrumental in the establishment of the Blue Ridge Parkway and its route through the high peaks of Western North Carolina. After successfully seeing the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Asheville visionaries recognized the opportunities that a scenic byway would create, along with its ability to preserve and showcase some of the most extraordinary views in the Southern Appalachians. Today, the parkway continues to be integral to the Asheville area. It provides countless opportunities for outdoor adventure, wildlife viewing, and appreciation of the mountains. Asheville leaders work hand-in-hand with parkway officials and the myriad of support groups that benefit the parkway to preserve, promote, and protect this unique linear park. As members of most of these organizations, community leaders take great pride in pointing to successes in protecting viewsheds, creating new stewards, and actively promoting the benefits and advantages that we all enjoy every day by having the parkway in our backyards.

How We're Doing Our Part
The Asheville Convention & Visitors Bureau is working to generate awareness of the Blue Ridge Parkway 75th anniversary with the aim of creating a new generation of stewards and advocates who will contribute to the sustainability of the Parkway. Asheville area community leaders are working with parkway partners such as the NC Arboretum to create new sustainable biotechnology research focusing on natural products for commercial and medicinal use. The Asheville Chamber of Commerce continues to be an advocate for the parkway, making sure its needs are addressed as part of its legislative agenda.
