The Town of Blowing Rock, a unique, year-round mountain destination in North Carolina’s High Country, gets its name from The Blowing Rock – an immense cliff located 4,000 feet above sea level and overhanging Johns River Gorge 3,000 feet below. The rocky walls of the gorge form a flume through which the northwest wind sweeps with such force that it returns light objects cast over the void. The Blowing Rock is a centerpiece attraction in the Blowing Rock community and remains an object of both mystery and legend.

Known as the Crown of the Blue Ridge, the Town of Blowing Rock sits astride the Eastern Continental Divide and just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. From the top of Blowing Rock are commanding views of layer upon layer of gorgeous mountain scenery. Blowing Rock is a time-honored destination – replete with high-end retail shops, unique restaurants, upscale retreats and charming inns, renowned artists and cultural events, verdant cottage gardens and trails on which to roam – in close proximity to exhilarating outdoor adventures and parks. The Town has attracted the affluent and the artistic to its tranquil environment for more than 100 years, and history continues to repeat itself as more and more visitors make the journey to discover the lure of Blowing Rock for themselves.

The Blue Ridge Parkway has deep roots in Blowing Rock as home to the original locating and claim engineer and consultant for the Blue Ridge Parkway – R. Getty Browning. It was primarily Browning who convinced federal officials to move the Parkway alignment to North Carolina from its original route through Tennessee. Many of Browning’s descendants still live in Blowing Rock today. Blowing Rock is the only full-service town on the Blue Ridge Parkway and is also home to one of the most popular and historic structures on the Parkway – the Cone Manor.

How We're Doing Our Part

Blowing Rock will use the Visitor Center and its annual events, such as Art in the Park, to engage and educate visitors about the Blue Ridge Parkway.
