Small Town America still exists just 35 miles northeast of Asheville. A sightseer’s paradise, Yancey County is filled with indescribable landscapes adorned by magnificent natural wonders. Festivals and fairs bring laughter and music to the quaint town square of Burnsville while scenic drives reveal working artists’ studios and rustic barns punctuated with colorful quilt square murals paying tribute to the heritage of its community. Visitors can experience the County’s unique cafes and charming shops that showcase native mountain crafts as well as the work of internationally known artists. Now in its 53rd year, Yancey County is well known for the Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair, which is always held the first weekend in August.
The Blue Ridge Parkway borders Yancey County for over 20 miles, from Milepost 339 at Crabtree Meadows to Milepost 360 at Balsam Gap. Many of our visitors exit the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 344 and follow Highway 80 through the scenic South Toe River Valley. With the Blue Ridge Parkway to the southeast and the Appalachian Trail to the northwest, this area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. With the highest average elevation of any county in North Carolina, Yancey County is home to six of the tallest peaks east of the Mississippi, including the highest – Mount Mitchell.
