Floyd County is a mountainous, rural area in southwest Virginia blessed with a convergence of beautiful terrain, hard-working citizens, and skilled artists, musicians, and craftspeople along with a cadre of progressive and inventive business managers.
From this mix of natural beauty and creative residents, Floyd County has slowly evolved from a primarily farming community into a popular destination for visitors seeking entertainment, fun, beauty, and relaxation.
Residents are proud of their association with the Blue Ridge Parkway, the popular and dynamic Crooked Road music trail, the growing ‘Round the Mountain trail of talented artisans, and the natural beauty created by mountains, hills, valleys, trees, and flowing streams.
Though a typical Blue Ridge Mountains community, Floyd County is linked with a broader community by Virginia Route 8 traveling south from Interstate 81 at Christiansburg and on U.S. 221 between Interstate 77 at Hillsville and Roanoke.
Floyd County, with some 40 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway within its borders, is proud to boast of having the longest stretch of the Parkway located in Virginia. It is also highly pleased that the most photographed place on the Parkway, Mabry Mill at milepost 176, and the highly popular Rocky Knob area with its campground (milepost 167), picnic area, and hiking trails are also within the County.
Thanks to the County’s proximity to the Parkway and perhaps to the CCC camp in a neighboring county where construction workers temporarily resided, many Floyd County residents developed a personal connection to the project as they earned their livings by helping build the Blue Ridge Parkway.
