The Town of Shenandoah – Shenandoah means Daughter of the Stars – is named after the picturesque Shenandoah River that passes through this quaint town, which is nestled between the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and Massanutten Ridge. Shenandoah proudly proclaims to be one of Virginia’s most picturesque towns with its abundant natural beauty, historic charm, and small-town atmosphere. With over 300 structures in its historic district, the Town is listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Shenandoah is also a historic railroad town, where visitors can still watch the only working railroad station between Hagerstown, MD, and Roanoke, VA, or view the railroad photos and memorabilia on display at Town Hall or the Visitor’s Center. Visitors to Shenandoah will also find unique shopping and dining options and special places to fish, canoe, tube, boat, and hike.
A short drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway, Shenandoah has always had a special relationship with its parks. The Town is committed to perserving its enviornment and won the local and state Urban Forestry Awards in 2008 for its efforts to preserve and enhance its natural resources. Shenandoah’s elected officials embrace the parkway’s values by funding projects committed to stewardship of its environment. River bank restoration is one example, as the Town worked with many local, state, and federal agencies to ensure environmentally sound practices. Riverbank and roadside litter cleanups are held several times a year and on-going roadside litter cleanups are done by Town employees throughout the year. Shenandoah is proud to partner with the Blue Ridge Parkway in the common goals of promoting our history, economics, environmental stewardship, and planning for future development that safeguards our natural resources and scenic beauty for future generations!
How We're Doing Our Part
The Town of Shenandoah will promote the parkway’s 75th anniversary through its newsletter, informational displays at our kiosk, Town Hall, links on its Web site, and in advertising for its 13th Annual Memorial Day Festival and Parade. The Town will continue its stewardship initiatives, including the river bank restoration that won the 2008 local and state Urban Forestry Awards. Projects completed thus far include willow spilling project along the bank; and sloping, planting trees, and staking shrubs. Elementary school students completed one bank stabilization project along a river tributary. Community members, local officials, and volunteers will continue to come together to complete projects that will preserve the region’s natural resources for years to come.
