In this place, nature, history, fun, and adventure come together. From one end of Rockbridge County to the other, visitors will find a landscape that stirs the mind, spirit, and intellect. Beauty is as timeless as Natural Bridge, a 215-foot high, 90-foot wide stone arch that embodies the soul of the region. As timeless as a sunset over the final resting place of Stonewall Jackson. As enduring as the Native Americans that share the stories of their Monacan ancestors. And as fresh as an Asian pear plucked from the orchard. A trip to our part of the world is not a typical wait-in-line, jump-a-coaster, eat-an-overpriced-funnel cake-kind of excursion. It’s a unique intersection of indoors and out. People and places. Artisans and equestrians. A place where visitors can hand-feed a giraffe or explore our country’s heritage. In Rockbridge County, caverns are not the only deep experience a person can have.
A starry night sky and the ruins of a 19th century lime kiln and quarry create a magical setting for theater and concerts from April through October at Theater at Lime Kiln. This special outdoor theater is part of the Blue Ridge Music Trail and continues to entertain by making Appalachian history come alive. Special events maintain the lively atmosphere of the area throughout the year and none can compare to the music festivals at the Virginia Horse Center and Clark’s Ole Time Music Center or food and wine festivals at Wade’s Mill and Rockbridge Vineyard. For the outdoor enthusiast scenic byways and beautiful countryside connect the quaint villages that make up Rockbridge County. Enjoy bicycling through the Blue Ridge Mountains or run the rapids of Goshen Pass in a canoe or kayak or simply float along the Maury River in an inner tube. Plan an extra day or two to take advantage of all there is to see and do. Rockbridge County has everything a visitor’s adventurous heart desires.
