Seventy five years ago when the Blue Ridge Parkway was being completed, two of Daniel Boone’s direct decendants were in Spruce Pine operating a blacksmith forge. Bea Hensley, who worked with the Boones, still operates a forge just off the Parkway at Milepost 331. Each year on the last Saturday in April, Spruce Pine Main Street sponsors the Fire on the Mountain Blacksmith Festival in downtown Spruce Pine, which is located only five miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Dozens of blacksmiths line the street and demonstrate their metalworking techniques with many selling their outstanding art work to visitors at the festival. The Toe River Arts Council on Oak Avenue hosts a blacksmith art exhibit the month leading up to the festival, exhibiting the highest quality blacksmith art. Hours for the Fire on the Mountain are 10AM-4PM and admission is free. Come watch demonstrations, try your hand at blacksmithing and enjoy an area that is a blacksmith nexus just off the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 331. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
