Vesuvius Heritage Day is celebrated annually on the second Saturday in October beginning as a means for the residents and friends of Vesuvius to celebrate their rich mountain heritage. Since its inception in 2004, the event has grown to include a year-round museum displaying historical memorabilia, hundreds of photographs, and the lively history of the area. Despite the numerous vendors, yard sales, antique shoppers, arts and crafts, children’s activities, farmers market, bake sales, down-home music, cakewalks, reenactments, and lots of food, the history of the area remains the central focus for the event. Relive the hardships these mountain people endured during the mining and foundry years, the booming railroad years, and into the Depression. Understand why many of the men stationed at the Vesuvius CCC camp while building the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway decided to stay and call this place “home.” Discover the people today devoted to remaining mountain folks, their uniqueness, and how important the mountain and the Parkway remains to them. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
