The annual Montford Music and Art Festival will take place in the NPS-designated Montford Area Historic District on May 22. The festival celebrates the rich musical and artistic heritage found in Montford, Asheville, and the region with approximately 4,000 annual attendees. All musical acts have some connection to Montford and a number of the vendors do as well. The festival is promoted in celebration of Preservation Month by the Buncombe County Historic Resources Commission.

One site in Montford that draws more annual visitors than the festival is Riverside Cemetery, which is two blocks from the festival. Notable burials include, photographer George Masa, Congressman Zebulon Weaver, Senator Robert Rice Reynolds, and Senator Thomas L. Clingman. Masa is best known for his tremendous efforts to establish Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as well as his scouting and mapping work for the Appalachian Trail. Weaver worked to acquire land for the Blue Ridge Parkway and Reynolds supported establishment of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Clingman, for whom Clingman’s Dome in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is named, lost a dispute with Elisha Mitchell as to which peak was taller: Clingman’s Dome or Mount Mitchell.

Special tours of Riverside Cemetery featuring the notable tombs to tie in with the BRP will be offered during the festival. These tours will highlight the link between these famous “residents” of Riverside Cemetery and their impact on the parkway and its terminus in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
