A selection of photographs, ephemera, and documents that describe many of the features that tourists and travelers encountered as they traveled – first by horse, then by train, and then by automobile within the region. Selections will be taken from the Shirley Stipp Ephemera Collection, the Carolina Mountain Club (Craggy Gardens creation), the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival and Shindig on the Green, the LeCompte Postcard Collection, the Ball Collection, and the large number of ephemeral materials associated with the promotion of rail travel, camping, hiking, schools, fishing, rafting, and other recreational activities in other collections. The exhibit will address local environmentalism in the holdings of the Upper French Broad Defense Association and Craggy Gardens creation and other grassroots initiatives; development of botanical interests in the local Garden Club records; the transition from horse-drawn carriages to the automobile; the early establishment of the suburbs of Asheville and rise of real estate promotion tied to local scenic beauty; etc.

The physical exhibit will be accompanied by an on-line exhibit that will contain extended narratives and documents related to the exhibition material and will feature a special section on the Blue Ridge Parkway, particularly a bibliography of travel and tourism in Western North Carolina with links to full-text resources.
