Nestled on the western slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the southwestern corner of Rockbridge County, Virginia, Buena Vista is an area of great natural beauty. Bounded by the Maury River, a major tributary of the great James River on the west, and partially surrounded by the Jefferson and George Washington national forests, the area offers numerous outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, and hiking. It is easily accessible from several exits off the Blue Ridge Parkway, as well as from I-81 and U.S. highways 60 and 501.

Mountain Day celebrates the culture, history, traditions, and natural beauty of Buena Vista. This annual street festival is held on the second Saturday of October, in the streets of downtown Buena Vista at a time when spectacular fall foliage is at its peak along the Blue Ridge. Mountain Day focuses on traditional “lost arts” and folk life, with live skill demonstrations and informational displays related to our natural heritage, local history and culture, as well as arts and crafts, continuous live music and entertainment, pony rides, a classic car show, antique farm machinery, living history interpreters, children’s activities, storytellers, Native American dancers, and more. In 2009 a folk music concert, the Blue Ridge Foothills Folk Festival, will be held on Friday night before the festival. An additional activity to tie in the Civilian Conservation Corps relationship with both Buena Vista and the Parkway will be added in 2010.
