MerleFest began in 1988 in memory of Eddy Merle Watson, son of Doc Watson. Its music is called “traditional-plus,” meaning the traditional music of the Appalachian region plus whatever other styles the musicians are in the mood to play.
Produced each year by the Wilkes Community College (WCC) College Endowment Corporation, the event is managed by the staff of the college’s Development Office. It is the primary fundraiser for WCC.
