An open-house style demonstration of Charcoal Making. The making of charcoal is a central piece of Virgina’s history resulting in wide-scale forest harvesting by the late 1800’s to support the iron making industry, especially along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Today, charcoal making represents an opportunity to utilize low-grade wood or waste-wood as a value-added niche market product to meet the growing demand of grilling enthusiasts.
