Orchard Gap and Milepost 194

This annual event on the parkway shows the importance of agriculture in Southwest Virginia and how it impacts the economy of the entire state. Visitors can pick their own cherries or buy them from local orchards in the area or on-site the day of the event.

Bluegrass music and dancing are an important part of the heritage and history of the local area. It is an integral part of life here in the mountains. You can practice your expertise in clogging and flatfooting to several local bands that will offer entertainment.

Storytelling was also a part of mountain life years ago. Its importance was in remembering history, teaching moral values, and in just plain fun at telling stories that entertain. We will have contestants from five to 12 years old and 13 and older tell stories to compete for prizes.

Our Thunder in the Mountain car and motorcycle cruise-in will bring back memories from a past era when some of the autos that drove the Parkway when it was first built will be on display.

Local crafters, antique dealers, artisans, and food vendors will provide you with a full day of experiencing the 75th anniversary of the Parkway. Craft demonstrators will show you how they make their crafts.

A fun zone for the kids will offer games, face-painting, and challenges to keep them occupied as you enjoy the bake-off contest with cookies, pies, cakes, and an assortment of other baked goods using cherries.

A Civil War encampment with reenactors in period costumes will allow you to learn about the living conditions during the Civil War and possibly shoot a Civil War musket.
