The “Singing” is a day-long gathering held out-of-doors in a meadow at the base of Grandfather Mountain. Music begins at 8:30 a.m. and continues throughout the day, with a break at mid-day for the sermon. Many families bring lawn chairs and picnics and make a day of seeing old friends and enjoying performances by top Southern Gospel groups.
With over 80 years of history, Singing on the Mountain has seen greats like Billy Graham, Roy Acuff, Arthur Smith, Boots Randolph, and Johnny Cash. The tradition continues with top Southern Gospel groups from around the southeast still making the pilgrimage to perform today. The festival celebrates the region and its deep spiritual and cultural ties. Vendors from local communities also come to sell food and crafts.
The main characteristic that links the charm of the Singing on the Mountain to the Blue Ridge Parkway is the one that encourages participants to reflect for the day and appreciate what they have. The deep culture of gospel music goes back for generations and links all who live in the Blue Ridge region. In addition, the long-established activity of fellowship is rooted deep in our customs, with many southern Appalachian families in the past joining together with friends and family on Sundays to catch up and enjoy a picnic.
