Grandfather Mountain Kidfest is a day designed to get kids excited about the nature and culture of the North Carolina Mountains through fun and entertaining activities. Activities in the past have included nature walks, storytelling, and craft-making. Much of the planned events engage visitors on topics that relate to the nature and culture of the Blue Ridge Parkway and its surrounding communities.

Culture experiences are made from craft creations and storytelling. Glen Bollick is a regular at the event and intrigues those watching his presentation with his old mountain tales and handmade instruments. This rich tradition of storytelling is very important to the history of the Blue Ridge region. The nature of the surrounding area is the other main topic of Kidfest. Birds of prey, salamanders, and many other animals have been the focus of presentations in the past. Games are also usually led by staff naturalists utilizing fun ways to teach children about the food chain and encroachments on habitat space.

Kidfest is the perfect event for engaging a new generation of stewards. The events planned excite children about the nature around them and hopefully teach them a few things they didn’t know before. We hope that the knowledge they gain during this fun, interactive way of learning stays with them through adulthood. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
