The Bascom Lamar Lunsford Festival is a day-long celebration of the music and dance traditions of the Southern Appalachians, with particular attention to the Blue Ridge Region. Music was, and still is, an integral part of life in the mountains. To help us celebebrate this important element of Appalachian culture, we have invited ballad singers, bluegrass bands, traditional string bands, square dancers, flatfooters, buck dancers, cloggers, and yodelers from all over western North Carolina and the surrounding states to perform throughout the day and into the evening. Some of the region’s most accomplished musicians will lead workshops, and a story/ ballad swap will share the mountains’ strong oral tradition. As a special feature of this year’s festival in celebration of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s 75th Annviersary, the main stage during the daytime segment will feature a “Music of the Blue Ridge” segment. This segment will be led by the Blue Ridge’s finest musicians, who will demonstrate and descibe the history of Blue Ridge Mountain Music making and the components that make it so unique. The highlight of the festival will be a concert at 7 p.m. in Moore Auditorium on the Mars Hill College Campus. The concert will feature more than twenty different performances, with the Stoney Creek Boys as the house band.
